Digestion is a complex physiological process that begins in the mouth and continues through various stages in the digestive system. It is a crucial mechanism that allows our bodies to break down food into smaller, absorbable molecules, which can then be used for energy and essential nutrients. The process starts in the mouth, where mechanical digestion begins as teeth grind and chop food while salivary enzymes begin to break down carbohydrates. Chewing also mixes food with saliva, forming a soft, moist mass called chyme, which makes it easier to swallow. Once swallowed, the food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach. Here, stomach acid and digestive enzymes further break down proteins, and the stomach's muscular contractions churn the mixture into a semi-liquid form known as chyme. The stomach acts as a temporary storage and mixing chamber before slowly releasing chyme into the small intestine.
