Digestion is a complex and essential process that occurs in the human body to break down the food we consume into nutrients that can be absorbed and used for energy, growth, and maintenance of bodily functions. It begins in the mouth, where enzymes in saliva start breaking down carbohydrates. As the food is chewed and mixed with saliva, it forms a bolus that travels down the esophagus to the stomach. In the stomach, gastric juices with powerful enzymes and acids further break down the food, creating a semi-liquid substance known as chyme. From the stomach, chyme enters the small intestine, where the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption takes place. Here, the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes to break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, while the liver produces bile to emulsify fats, aiding in their digestion. The walls of the small intestine are lined with millions of tiny finger-like structures called villi, which increase the surface area for absorption.
