Digestion is a complex physiological process that the body undergoes to break down food into smaller, absorbable nutrients that can be utilized for energy, growth, and repair. It begins in the mouth, where chewing and the secretion of saliva initiate the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food. Enzymes in saliva start to break down carbohydrates into simpler sugars, laying the foundation for further digestion in the stomach and intestines. From the mouth, the partially digested food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where gastric juices containing hydrochloric acid and enzymes continue the breakdown of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
Once in the small intestine, the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption takes place. Here, bile from the liver and enzymes from the pancreas further break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into their component molecules, which are then absorbed through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream. The small intestine is lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi and microvilli, which greatly increase the surface area for nutrient absorption. Any remaining indigestible materials, along with water and electrolytes, pass into the large intestine, where water is absorbed and the waste products are compacted into feces for elimination from the body through the rectum and anus.
