Digestion is a complex physiological process that allows the body to break down food into nutrients that can be absorbed and used for energy, growth, and repair. It begins in the mouth, where chewing and saliva production initiate the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food. Enzymes in saliva start the process of carbohydrate digestion, breaking down starches into simpler sugars. From there, the food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where further digestion takes place through the action of gastric juices containing hydrochloric acid and enzymes that break down proteins.
Once the food is partially digested in the stomach, it moves into the small intestine, where the majority of nutrient absorption occurs. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to further break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, is released into the small intestine to aid in the digestion and absorption of fats. The lining of the small intestine is lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi and microvilli, which increase the surface area available for nutrient absorption into the bloodstream.
The final stages of digestion occur in the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed, and waste products are formed into stool for elimination. The large intestine is also home to trillions of bacteria known as the gut microbiota, which play a crucial role in digestion and overall health. These beneficial bacteria help ferment fiber and produce short-chain fatty acids, vitamins, and other compounds that support intestinal health and immune function.
