Digestion is a complex physiological process that begins in the mouth and continues throughout the digestive system. It involves the breakdown of food into smaller, more absorbable molecules that can be used by the body for energy and nutrients. In the mouth, the process starts with mechanical chewing and the action of enzymes in saliva that begin breaking down carbohydrates. As food travels down the esophagus, it enters the stomach where acidic gastric juices and enzymes further break down proteins and mix with partially digested food to form chyme. From there, chyme moves into the small intestine, where the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption occur. Enzymes from the pancreas and the small intestine continue to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into their simplest forms. Nutrients are then absorbed through the intestinal walls and transported to the bloodstream. Finally, undigested material moves into the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed, and waste is prepared for elimination. This intricate process ensures that the body receives the essential nutrients it needs for growth, energy, and overall well-being.
