The waste products, including indigestible fiber, dead cells, bacteria, and other substances, form stool. The stool is stored in the rectum and eliminated from the body through the anus during a bowel movement. The remaining undigested and unabsorbed materials, along with water and electrolytes, move into the large intestine (colon). The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes, while also housing beneficial bacteria that help ferment certain undigested fibers and produce certain vitamins. Nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water, are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and into the bloodstream. They are then transported to cells throughout the body for various functions. The chyme moves into the small intestine, where the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption takes place. The small intestine receives digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver (stored in the gallbladder). These enzymes and bile further break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The small intestine also has specialized structures called villi and microvilli that increase the surface area for absorption. It's important to note that the digestive process can be influenced by factors such as the types of foods consumed, individual variations, digestive disorders, and overall health. Maintaining a balanced and varied diet, staying hydrated, managing stress levels, and practicing healthy eating habits can support optimal digestion. If you have concerns about digestion or suspect any digestive issues, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
